Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear?

Please wear something that is loose and comfortable to move around in.

I will need access to your arms and legs below the elbows and knees (including hands and feet).

Depending on what we are working on, I will need access to the areas in your body that you want treated.

Acupuncture needles

How many treatments will I need?

I always recommend that people come weekly for four weeks in the beginning. Acupuncture’s benefits grow with regular treatment. After four weeks, we will have a good idea of how your body responds to treatment. After four weeks, we will make a plan together for remaining treatments.

Do you take insurance?

Yes! I do accept insurance, and I am an in-network provider with IBX.

If you would like to use your insurance for acupuncture, I will need to verify your insurance coverage. Please email a copy of your insurance card and your birthday to [email protected]

While I do take insurance, there are often limitations on coverage even if you do have acupuncture benefits under your plan. Some insurance carriers only cover certain conditions or have visit limits. I will double check this information during insurance verification so that you will know what you owe before treatment.

Fire cupping

Does it hurt?

No, acupuncture treatment does not hurt. In fact, most people find it relaxing and will doze off during treatment. Some people even get “acu-stoned.”

Sometimes when points are needled you will feel some sensation, but the needles should not be painful beyond the initial insertion.

Are there side effects or risks?

Acupuncture is considered very safe, without many serious side effects.

Common side effects include bruising, minor bleeding from needled points, and soreness. You may also feel some fatigue, especially if it’s your first time getting acupuncture.

More serious but unlikely side effects include a vasovagal reaction (fainting) from needle insertion, but this is not in itself dangerous, just unpleasant. You can lower this risk by making sure you have something to eat before treatment

If you are pregnant, it is important to let me know before treatment, but pregnant people can safely receive regular acupuncture treatments throughout their pregnancy.

Cupping

What happens during an appointment?

Appointments begins with an intake and brief physical exam. We’ll talk about how you’re responding to treatment and any other changes in your health and general wellness. I will look at your tongue (yes, really!), feel your pulse, and feel acupuncture channels.

After that, I will insert the needles and leave the room so that you can relax and enjoy the treatment. These appointments are designed to be comfortable and relaxing.

I may also include supplemental therapies including herbal heat therapy, herbal topical treatment, cupping, gua sha, and or Tuina massage.
