Acupuncture for Sciatica

Are you experiencing shooting nerve pain down your leg? If you have sciatica you are probably familiar with this intense and radiating discomfort. Usually the problem originates in your back and results in pain traveling down your hip and leg. It’s onset is often acute and can become chronic over time.
You may benefit from acupuncture treatments to help manage your symptoms and restore your mobility. Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective complementary treatment for leg pain related to sciatica. A 2024 JAMA study shows statistically significant results from treating sciatica with acupuncture, with participants experiencing less and pain and improved function at the end of the study.
So what acupuncture can do?
Regular treatment can loosen tight muscles that impinge the nerve as it travels down the leg, reduce inflammation, release the body’s natural opioids to help relieve pain.
From the perspective of acupuncture medicine, sciatica is the result of blockages in the channels, often the Gallbladder channel. Treatment focuses on restoring free flow to the channels.
What to expect from a treatment for sciatica
Acupuncture treatment for sciatica will often focus on treating the low back, hip and legs. If appropriate, I will also incorporate electrical stimulation to increase the strength of the treatment. Electroacupuncture is similar to using a TENS unit, except we attach electrodes to the needles rather than the skin.
The benefits of acupuncture accrue over time, so I often recommend that patients commit to weekly treatments for four weeks at the beginning of treatment. After four sessions, we will have a good idea of how well acupuncture is working to help manage your symptoms and we can decide how much longer to continue. A single course of treatment is often somewhere between 6 – 8 weeks. My goal is to reduce your symptoms as much as we can and then start to treat only when you have a recurrence of pain. Some people will then only return for monthly, seasonal or annual treatments as needed.
If you are interested in trying acupuncture for sciatica, you can book a consultation with me, schedule an appointment and/or reach out to request an insurance verification. See you in the clinic!
